For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

In the page below, items listed in blue are recommended features that will improve the quality of the costume. Items listed in red are intended to further enhance the finished costume.

Special Notes:

  • The armor parts are gloss black and made from one of these (or similar) types of materials:
    • Fiberglass
    • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene).
  • All striping "flash" is clean and non-weathered.
  • Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GML's and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Tx nova elite bucket.jpg Helmet
  • Helmet flash consists of a single gold vertical stripe that travels from the top of the chin, between the eye lenses, to the back of the dome.
    • Stripe does not enter the teeth area.
    • A gold bar is also located under the tube stripes, on each side of the helmet.
  • Traps (trapezoids on dome of helmet) and tears (area beneath the corners of eye lenses) are solid black.
  • Eye lenses are sufficiently dark to obscure the costumer's eyes.
    • Lenses may be flat or bubbled.
    • Acceptable colors are black, smoke, or dark green.
  • The frown has either 6 or 8 teeth removed.
    • Wire or plastic mesh is utilized inside the helmet to cover the open pieces of the frown.
  • The aerators (cylinders on either side of the vocoder) are black.
    • Screening maybe silver or black.
  • The "ear" bars have three or four bumps and may be glossy or painted flat black.
  • The tube stripes are black in color and may number between 9 and 15 per side with the curve bends extending backwards.
    • Stripes may be hand painted or decals.
    • There does not need to be the same number per side.
  • Note: The FX helmet is considered deprecated (to be avoided), though is acceptable for Legion requirements.
  • Note: A stock (out of the box) MRCE and/or EFX PCR helmet does not meet the basic 501st requirements without major modification.

  • Black with horizontal ribs, fitted to the wearer, and extending from the base of the neck to conceal the entire neck.

  • Black non-textured material, either one-piece or two-piece construction with no visible zippers or logos.

  • Pauldron is gold in color and made from vinyl or leather.
  • Pauldron is worn over the right shoulder.

  • These must be securely mounted in front and may free float in back.

  • A gold vertical stripe centered on the outside of the armor.
  • The shoulders are considered effectively symmetrical.
    • They may be worn interchangeably on the left and right shoulders.

  • Armor is fully closed.
  • A gold vertical stripe is centered on the outside of the armor.

  • Armor is fully closed.

  • The hand plates are painted gold.
  • Armor is roughly pentagonal in shape.
  • Mounted securely over the back of the glove.
    • Optional: As an alternative to plastic, hand plates may be made out of latex or latex-like material.





TK anh stunt gloves.jpeg Gloves
  • Black in color, made of either rubber, nomex, leather, or leather-like material, with no visible straps or logos/designs. The fingers are enclosed, non-textured.

  • Chest armor overlaps the abdominal armor.




Ammo Pouch Black.jpg Ammo Pouches
  • German MP-40 style ammo pouches.
  • Black in color, made of canvas, leather or leather-like material.
  • There are two minimum:
    • One pouch on the left shoulder and one on the right hip.
    • Optional: A rectangular black leather "roadblock" pouch may be substituted for the MP-40 styled right hip pouch.

  • Back plate contains a "O II" design with little or no overlap of the kidney plate.

  • Solid black in color and styled after the ANH Sandtrooper packs.
    • A loose interpretation is allowed, but screen accuracy is encouraged.

  • The abdomen armor has a button area with 9 gloss black buttons, approximately 7/16" in diameter.

  • A single kidney/ posterior armor piece is acceptable.
  • If a separate kidney plate is used, it lines up with the abdomen armor.
  • The top of the kidney armor is flush to or under the back armor.

  • A single kidney/ posterior armor piece is acceptable.
  • If a separate posterior plate is used, it lines up below the bottom of the belt with with the abdomen armor.
  • There is a minimal gap between the posterior and and kidney armor.




TX nova elite belt.jpg Belt
  • Belt front is made of plastic (ammo belt).
  • The belt is comprised of 6 rectangular boxes and three square buttons.
    • One centered in the middle and one on each end.
  • The rear portion of the belt is 3 to 3.5" wide.
  • Rear section may be made of glossy black ABS or a similar shiny material.
    • Optional: Black canvas or similar heavy material may also be used.
  • MP-40 style Ammo pouch is mounted on the right hip.
    • Optional: A rectangular black leather "roadblock" pouch may be substituted for the MP-40 styled right hip pouch.
  • Drop boxes (small rectangular boxes attached to standard trooper belts), holster and thermal detonator are not worn.

  • The thigh armor may open and firmly close in the back allowing the two halves to appear sealed when viewed by spectators. The ammo belt is installed on the bottom of the right thigh.




TX nova shins.jpg Lower Leg Armor
  • The armor is able to open and firmly close in the back allowing the two halves to appear sealed when viewed by spectators.
  • A trapezoid knee plate is affixed to the top of the left lower leg piece.
  • The center hexagon, upper ridge and top trim of the knee plate is painted gold.





TX shadowstorm boots.jpeg Boots
  • Black leather or leather-like, above ankle height, with a flat sole, and small U-shaped elastic sections on both sides of the ankle with no buckles or laces. Jodphur-type boots or an equivalent style. All stitching must be black, and unnecessary or decorative stitching must not be present. Elvis / Mariachi boots are not acceptable.
  • White, or other color boots may be painted black so long as the boots are maintained to remain the proper color.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

  • A rectangular black leather "roadblock" style pouch may be substituted for the MP-40 styled right hip pouch.





Generic-dlt19.jpeg DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DLT-19 heavy blaster rifle is much more powerful with a much greater range than the E-11 blaster. Because of its powerful, long range capabilities, this rifle is commonly used on Imperial controlled planets with large, clear, open areas.

  • Based on a real or replica MG-34 machine gun.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • A DLT-19 is an MG-34 with T-tracks on the barrel, ejection port cover added, and a small disk on left side.





Generic-rt97.jpeg RT-97C Heavy Blaster Rifle

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the RT-97C features a long barrel to increase the firing range of the energy beam projectile. Three scopes increase accuracy and versatility. The first scope is an energy scanner capable of detecting life forms. The second scope is a rangefinder that automatically adjusts the targeting components. The third scope uses infrared heat imaging technology.

  • Based on a real or replica MG-15 machine gun.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Correct style scopes.
  • Silver metal hose is present on the right hand side of barrel between the trigger and “saddle barrel”.





Generic-t21.jpeg T-21 Light Repeating Blaster Rifle

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries.

  • Based on a real or replica Lewis Mark I machine gun. For this prop the magazine disk and bipod of the original gun are left off.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • A ribbed length of tubing shall be installed over the front of the gun barrel.
  • A canvas, leather, or nylon sling shall be attached.
  • Sight shall be present on top where ribbing meets base.
